Maurizio Cattelan one last time
As the Guggenheim was open until 1:00AM last night to support a Maurizio Cattelan program (which included as speakers Courtney Love and Pierre Huyghe, amongst many others), I took the opportunity to take my visiting Chinese relatives (who come from Central China and have never before traveled to a foreign country) to surmount Wright's helix and view the show, the last day of which is today (Sunday). Never ermind the fact that they've never been exposed to contemporary art, they've never even really encountered modern art before, so their reactions were quite amusing.
Reading on Cattelan he really emerges as a hilarious character. Most if not many of these objects come from some art-prank that Cattelan unleashed on the world, often to cries of local anguish and rage or sometimes just plain mirth. He seems to be veritably built to rebel and provoke, and somehow I really dig that.
As for the Chinese relatives, they peppered me with countless questions. There were in fact so many questions that had I seen Cattelan standing there I would have dumped them on him to answer their questions.
