Spongebob!

The Chinese Nephew is, of course, incredibly well-mannered from a Chinese standpoint, although he does periodically stare at me (I'm the first non-Chinese he has ever spoken to at length). However, like a lot of Chinese folks fresh from the inland China, he has little or no awareness that there's actually a culture outside of China that is not in some way derivative of Chinese of culture (not too much of surprise  when you consider a country where 95% of the population shares your culture  and is related to you). For example, about a week ago he asked me if 'Constantinople' was a good name for himself, and I replied  that that'd be like me naming myself Beijing or Shanghai: It'd be a cultural nonsequitur.

But given the constant peppering of good-natured questions, and given the huge array of completely inappropriate assumptions, it occurred to me and the boy that we could, probably, convince the nephew that Spongebob Squarepants would be a great name. I mean, really: We could probably pull this off for a while, until he saw who Spongebob was (and even then, he might not immediately change his name).
